Greetings, all! Recently I undertook this project to review all of the playable skins in the core version- that's right, all 146 of them- to see which ones we could improve upon. Going back and editing our old work has never been a priority when it comes to these, so a good number of them are still sporting their old sprites from the version they first released in. Heck, some of them are from the very first version of the game!
Since we've accepted community fixes for skins in the past, I thought it might be a nice idea to put together a semi-official list of what we on the devteam have identified as potential targets for improvements, so you can better focus your efforts and avoid stepping on each others' (or our) toes.
Introducing: The Great Big Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch Core Skin Tracker!
This sheet will track the version that our skins were last updated, and whether they could use some TLC. They also include a column for jumping, jump & shooting, and run & gunning sprites, which were a new functionality added in V6C. If you've ever wanted to try submitting sprites to us to fix up an old or favorite skin, this is a good place to start to pick out someone you'd want to try doing.
A few ground rules for how this'll work:
1. When you want to claim a skin to work on, send me or Trillster a PM so I can put the claim on the list. I am debating whether to keep this anonymous, but for now, I won't be putting names on the sheet.
2. We will not implement any extra frames (jump & jump+shoot, or run+shoot) until every skin in the game has them finished. They are very, very distant stretch goals. You can work on them if you like, but this caveat is important to keep in mind.
3. Any skins with a red box in the D column are considered higher-priority targets, or skins we'd like to replace sooner than later. They may update to include new ones as time goes on and the more egregious ones are replaced.
4. Submitting a skin is the same process as it always has been on the forum: create a new topic in Bugs & Suggestions with the old and new sprite sheets side by side so we can compare them easily. Only submit one skin per topic!
5. If you claim & submit a skin, the devteam still reserves the right to edit or reject anything you submit. If accepted, you will be credited for the base work.
6. While nobody is stopping you from submitting remakes for skins listed as "No Changes", these are ones we are not prioritizing on the team. We'd prefer to fix the ones we know could use help before tackling the others.
7. Try not to claim too many skins at once! Give people a chance to contribute.
8. Try not to work on skins that were claimed so far, either! Better to spread the work around rather than have everyone converge on the same guys.
We're thankful for your work to make our game every tiny bit better. We're looking forward to seeing your submissions in the future!
